Giving is good for everyone . . . and not just at Christmas

Giving gifts sustains our communal life together. It keeps things in circulation, as they were meant to be. Taxation does that in a more systematic way, but gift giving is voluntary, engages our hearts, and creates a relationship between the giver and the recipient.

This was the year of elections. More than 100 countries, including many of the world’s most populous – Brazil, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia, Mexico – all held national polls in this past year.

Around half of the world’s population voted for new governments during the past 12 months. Yet what difference did it make?
